For many years, Clonony Castle has been cared for by Rebecca Armstrong Black — a woman who dedicated a significant chapter of her life to preserving this extraordinary place. Her stewardship kept the castle standing and its story alive at a time when many such monuments have been lost to neglect.
Now, a rare opportunity has emerged: for the Coghlan family to acquire Clonony Castle and ensure it is preserved, restored, and returned to its rightful place in Irish heritage — not as a ruin, but as a living monument to five centuries of history.
The initiative is being led by members of the Coghlan family — direct descendants of those who once called this castle home. Their commitment has made this effort possible, and their vision will carry it forward.
Held in Trust for Generations
The goal is to convey Clonony Castle to a heritage trust — ensuring that the Coghlan family's connection to their ancestral home is secured in perpetuity.
Once safely in the trust, the castle will be conserved, gradually restored, and — in time — opened as a heritage destination and event space for the Coghlan diaspora and all who share a love of Irish heritage.
Four Phases of Stewardship
Secure the Castle
Acquire Clonony Castle and convey it into a heritage trust — ensuring it remains in the care of the Coghlan family and can never be separated from its history.
Stabilise & Protect
Commission structural assessments and undertake immediate conservation works to protect the tower house from further deterioration — roof stabilisation, drainage, and masonry repair.
Restore & Open
Over time, restore the castle to a condition that allows it to be opened as a heritage site — a living monument to Gaelic Ireland, the Coghlan clan, and the broader story of Irish history.
Endow the Future
Establish a sustainable model for the castle's long-term care — through heritage tourism, educational programmes, and a community of Coghlan descendants who carry the mission forward.
